View Full Version : Movies: What are your faves? What have you seen recently?

So, since political banter is not necessarily for everyone.... what kinds of movies does everyone like to watch? And which ones are your faves? What movies have you watched recently?
My answer:
I'm a fan of anime movies, as well as comedy, cult, action and martial arts films.
I just saw "Team America: World Police" this past weekend and it was quite possibly the greatest movie of all time. It's incredibly stupid, but if you get the satire on politics and the whole movie industry, it's rather good.
Another movie I saw this past weekend was "The Incredibles". I found it quite enjoyable with a rather decent storyline and good characters. :)
I can't really pick my faves.... there are just too many. Even if I broke it down to genres.

I know what you mean about fave's cause there's no way I could liste them but there are a few that I can watch again and again and not get sick of eg. Much Ado About Nothing (Kenneth Branagh version with Emma Thompson, Denzel, Keanu and a load of other not so vastly known actors and actresses),
Whole NIne Yards, 5th element (for some reason) and a few others.
I've been wondering about the Incredibles...I'll have to see it as for Team America...gathering from the commercial it was indeed stupid so I'll wait for the video on that one heheheheh.
After the Sunset was the last one I saw, I think...and am looking forward to Alexander and Bridgette Jones 2 :).

The ones I could watch many times over and not get bored:
The Boondock Saints
Hero
X-Men & X2
Disney's Mulan
Swordfish
Pi
The Knockaround Guys
The Prince of Egypt
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Kinda want to see Alexander... but not a big Collin Ferrel fan so I might not. Also, looking forward to The Spongebob Squarepants Movie.

I actually prefer movies based on reviews, not on specific genres. I rarely watch movies more than once. One film I can think of that I want to see again is Fahrenheit 9/11. It was very entertaining the first time, but I didn't catch all of the information that Moore presented in the film. I think it's going to get Best Picture, BTW.
I haven't seen too many movies lately. I've rented a couple of pretty good independents, though: Intermission and Coffee & Cigarettes. A few months ago, I saw City of God, which has to be the best foreign film ever. Definitely on my list of top 10. They were showing Full Metal Jacket on TV recently, which I never saw before. It was fantastic. It's often impossible to say if one movie is better than another, but I can probably compile a list of top 10 movies in no particular order.
I have not seen most of those movies you listed, GofN. Crouching Tiger was great. X-Men/X2 and Swordfish were kind of stupid. I'll have to see Team America on video.
So what are your favorite actors and actresses?
HEffie
Fri 19th Nov 2004, 05:29
I can pretty much say there's a time for Disney movies...and those times keep coming so I don't think I could get sick of most of them :). Shark Tale was entertaining, I LOOVED The MUSIC!
Diplomat, I tend to be all for independents, but for some reason I don't watch any, at least not recently :( it's on my TO DO list and deff that Fahrenheit movie which I haven't seen yet.
HEY GON, not a big Colin Farell fan either, but I love movies set in older times, just love 'em :).

I usually can't bear to watch most movies multiple times. I can watch my favorites again, but only if I haven't seen them in a long time.
It's been a while since I've added anything to my fav list for some reason.

As for movies, last one I saw was "Saw" and that was awesome. Mmm... psychological thrillers :D

Hey Hey, there's a topic for battling this out :) who'd ever think that would be such a popular topic with Mafia people hehehehhehe, but in a way it makes sense :).
It's not about watching movies multiple times...it's about some movies that you can watch multiple times and not get sick of it...maybe it's just me and a few other people who eventually forget the endings...so it's a surprise all over again...I think it's a sign...that I watch waaaaaaaay too many movies.

Yeah, exactly, Radwulf. :)
Another independent film I saw recently was Baadasssss! (yes, that's how it's spelled). That movie was so obscure that my local video store didn't even have it. Had to download it. But it's great, though.

Angelina Jolie
Halle Berry

Hugh Jackman
Samuel L. Jackson
David Duchovny
Ed Norton
Sean Patrick Flannery
hahaha I guess I like a lot of actors/actresses.

goddessofnin
Sun 5th Dec 2004, 16:55
Not yet... I want to see the original Japanese one first...
But I did go to see Alexander last night..... *groan* To anyone who was planning on seeing it: DON'T. Unless you like movies with a lot of pointless scenes and no real character development. They could have made the movie about an hour shorter and it still would have told the same story... and at least made it feel like I wasted less of my time.
Angelina Jolie and Rosario Dawson did a decent job, though.

You didn't wonder why everyone had diff accents from all over the world when they'd been living together for eleven years or whatever it is?
Anyways...with all the bad press and criticism..I won't be seeing it in the theatre, I'll wait till it comes out on video.

Mon 6th Dec 2004, 01:28
Why would you go see Alexander with all the bad reviews it got? There are so many better movies playing right now. Over the last couple of weeks, I saw Sideways and Ray, both of which I would highly recommend.
HEffie
Mon 6th Dec 2004, 08:21
I keep saying I'm gonna go see RAY cause I loved Ray Charles and his brilliant music...and because of the music I deff think it should be seen with surround sound ;). I only go to see the movies I think are worth being seen on the big screen eg. big action or musicals.
goddessofnin
Tue 7th Dec 2004, 00:51
Sometimes I have to watch movies I don't want to see...
But to answer the question about the different accents: I think Angelina Jolie sounded Macedonian. At least that is what my Macedonian friend sounded like when I was in school. *shrug* It did bother me that Val Kilmer sounded like he was trying to be Scottish... and that everyone else sounded like they were trying to be British. And then Rosario Dawson sounded like she was trying to sound Macedonian... except she is supposed to be Babylonian.... so... hmmm.... but even then, the accents were the LEAST of the problems with that movie.
I should have gone to see Spongebob Squarepants The Movie instead... :( Maybe next weekend. :) Also, I can't wait for Phantom of the Opera to come out.. *dance*

ok, this weekend i have seen the following movies:
Bourne Supremacy= good, european style

Yeah, I never got into Friends either. Whenever I'd catch it on TV, it didn't seem funny to me at all. Same with Will & Grace--not funny.
The best show on TV by far, that I've seen, has to be The Wire on HBO. It's phenomenal. It's essentially about the business of drug trafficking in Baltimore and cops in their futile efforts to pursue the drug dealers. If you have HBO, it's definitely worth checking out. I also love 24. It's so addictive, but only if you watch it from the beginning.

The only thing funny about Will & Grace is actually Karen and Jack....
Oh, and I forgot to mention Law & Order and Monk!!
As far as some of the Movies people have been mentioning:
Excorcist: The Beginning - I thought it was creepy, but towards the middle of the movie, you could figure all the stuff out.
Troy - At least this was better than Alexander was....
The Bourne Supremacy - I liked this one, too... but some parts of the story line were boring.
Movie I want to see is: Spanglish
I still haven't gotten around to Phantom, or Blade Trinity... and then there's still Spongebob... *sigh* There isn't enough time, and I don't have enough money!!!

I've just seen The Village. I actually thought it was very good and well directed. I don't know why it got such bad reviews. Maybe I liked it because my expectations were low from seeing the reviews. The premise doesn't make much sense once you think about it, but it works as a film.
I also saw Anchorman--horrible film; wouldn't recommend it. That one actually got pretty good reviews.

I watched this week, Ray Charles, i recommend it. Of course it has drugs involved just as most famouse people were all involed at one time or another. But the story of his life is trully remarcable. I always saw him doing commercials and heard of his greatness as the joiner of gospell and blues, but now i know how it came to be.
Another movie i saw recently was The Jakson 5 whic is the life of Michael Jakson.
Also good movie, it bring a lot of light as to why he is the way he is today. Now, here are no drugs... and i for sure would have thaught that he would be using drugs somewhere in his point in life. Very interesting. The one thing that the movie does not speak of , is the molestation that he went through as a child (only to very small percentage). His father was a pimp so to speak. But you have to see the movie first and then there is a documentary on VH1 that goes into much detail of his mental state of mind and how he got here due to his fathers ways of depriving him from so many things in life which are essential in the growing up process.

Recently watched Flight of the Phoenix on dvd. There were some good parts... but it wasn't great.
DVDs I've been meaning to watch (they are laying around here somewhere):
Finding Neverland
Ray
In the theatre, we watched Kung Fu Hustle a couple of weeks ago. THAT was a good movie.. and also has a good soundtrack. There were scenes where they used a Sarasate violin concerto.... *sigh* it made me miss playing in an orchestra. Interesting movie, indeed.
Well, that's all I have to report for now...

I'm a movie consumer w/ such low standards that you wouldn't believe the movies I like unless you ask Alicia for a confirmation. Anyway, very rarely in my carreer have I witnessed such a boring picture like Kingdom of Heaven. Leaving the hystorical or religious issues aside and judging it as a movie and not as some kind of holy epic tale, it didn't even have enough blood for a 2hrs+ movie :). I don't remember anything so boring since The Mists of Avalon. Orient Express and Lost in Translation are nothing compared to KoH. I admit I liked the first 5 minutes, I anticipated a great movie after those minutes, then I remembered it was directed by the same person as The Gladiator and I calmed down. I can't even label it as "see it only if you can't get it on CD", it's way lower than that, it's a "watch it unless there's nothing else running"

Batman Begins was pretty good, and Fantastic 4. They were both good, with only a couple of things that bothered me (it's an engineering thing, I think)... but as far as story and action, they did a good job.

Mon 11th Jul 2005, 04:09
Batman Begins was awesome. It definitely deserves its 4 stars. There's no excuse to rate it as "pretty good." :) Christian Bale is one of my favorite actors. He is probably the best actor to have played Batman. I'm usually not a fan of comic book movies, but this one was exceptional because it wasn't made for kids. It had a certain class to it.
HEffie
Mon 11th Jul 2005, 07:26
I haven't had the chance to watch it yet, but Christian Bale is a totally awesome actor and I've appreciated his acting abilities way back...it's too bad he's so disregarded and treated as an unknown when his resume trails for pages, I'm sure.

Tue 12th Jul 2005, 20:03
The first movie I remember him from is American Psycho (2000), which I only saw a few years ago. I think he was pretty unknown before then. He was also great in Equilibrium. I'm looking forward to seeing The Machinist. My video store doesn't even have it, so I'll have to get it from somewhere else (i.e. download it). :)

Wed 13th Jul 2005, 03:40
American Psycho was really good and totally f***ed up. I loved it!! :D
I think Christian Bale did an awesome job as Batman. I think he did better than Keaton, and Keaton is the only other Batman that I liked... he was the only non-sushine/lollipops batman. The only reason I rated Batman Begins as "pretty good" was because I found fault with a part of the story. Like I said, it's an engineering thing, and I don't want to mention it outright because I don't want to spoil the movie for people who haven't had a chance to see it yet.
Diplomat
Fri 15th Jul 2005, 01:52
Does the fault that you found with Batman Begins have to do with the effects of that microwave weapon? 'Cause I thought some elements of the film including that one weren't terribly realistic. But that didn't really change my opinion of the movie. I think the director made the world as realistic as possible. The Batman character was three-dimensional. But he had to stay true to the original comic.
I also saw The Machinist yesterday. I don't know, it kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. It was officially a thriller, but I didn't find it much thrilling or suspenceful about it. But another terrific performance by Christian Bale. BTW, Maestro asked a while back if it was out on video already. Yeah, it's been out for a month or two.

I loved Christian in Swing Kids..mostly because men who dance that well get a 10 instantly :), but also cause he's a really good actor.

Soooooo I just saw "The Island"..early screening promo thing (for IN-crowd people;)) heheheheheh(really...they were giving them out to mall-employees  ) I thought it was kinda interesting...reminded us of the Matrix kinda. Sat 16th Jul 2005, 03:22
Cloning organs is not the same as cloning people. Having a degree in bioengineering, the research goals of which I was exposed to, were not about recreating people, but being able to create living tissues to combat the low supply of transplant organs. Such as being able to graft a new kidney or liver by using what we know about stem cells and the vascular system.
Researchers aren't the ones who plan to make clones of entire people... it's the greedy bastards who think that clones of themselves and others could be treated like slaves or non-humans... we'd go way back into the dark ages if society let that happen.

As for the tickets...they were giving them out to the first 25 stores in the mall to make it to customer service to pick them up. There was a girl walking towards it at the same time as me and I tried to make friendly chatter but she forced a smile and then ran ahead of me. The lady at customer service was, however, onto her little charade and denied her a second double pass which she was trying to get under the pretense that she didn't know that one of her co-workers had been there only moments before. After seeing that that didn't work she argued that the notice said "first come first serve", lol the notices hadn't even been handed out to all the stores yet and she wanted 4 tickets, hilarious.
This promo tickets thing only happens once in a blue moon though...the last time we got free anything it was for ELF and the tickets were for Saturday at 10 am when ofcourse, any retail employee works.

I thought The Hitchhiker's Guide was great. It wasn't stupid. It was actually smart and silly at the same time. I haven't read the book, but I'm guessing it could have been a much worse adaptation. I'm actually not a fan of sci-fi at all. That movie was very different from your typical Star Wars or The Matrix. It addressed ideas like advanced alien civilizations and space travel from a scientifically accurate perspective. That's why it seemed unique and original to me. The scene where they built a computer to calculate the answer to the ultimate question of the universe was brilliant. It took 7 million years for the computer to do it. There really are problems in computer science that would take millions of years to calculate using existing equipment, but here they went ahead and tried it. I guess I caught on to things in the plot that most people missed.
Maestro, you're not alone in not connecting with that movie. It didn't receive stellar reviews from critics and the public ratings weren't that great either. :)

Saw another sci-fi film called Serenity. Wasn't impressed by it. It was actually pretty lame overall. The story was boring and unengaging. The characters were two-dimensional and stereotypical. The movie didn't make me care for them. It's one of those movies where the action in outer space pays no respect to actual laws of physics, and that distracts from the whole movie. The action takes place 500 years into the future, but the inside of the spaceships looks like a cockpit from 1960s aircraft. I'm not sure why it got decent reviews.

ok, I'll give some more information about narnia movie because is my favorite :)
The symbolism in The Chronicles of Narnia represents the ongoing power struggle between good and evil. The lion, Aslan, represents good or, more specifically (according to some scholars), Jesus; the White Witch, Jadis, is the incarnation of evil, i.e. Satan; and the wardrobe, inspired by the handmade wardrobes from Lewis' childhood homes, represents the bridge that leads us to confront the battle between good and evil.
The movie was filmed in New Zealand — just like Peter Jackson's movie adaptations of J.R.R. Tolkien's Lord of the Rings series. In fact, Tolkien was a close friend of Lewis', and the two were part of a literary circle known as the Inklings.

in response to your question Diplomat, i have a couple of friends in the Marine corps, and i got the info from them. one being an E9 special, the other an instructor, these being quite high ranks, but the good thing is they are both real christians, and know the good and the bad, language is harsh but the movie exagerates to show the harshness of reality in times of war, which is not quite true, but it also is something some people like because it makes them harder or more ruthless in their feelings.

Yeah, Cinderella Man is definitely an inspiring movie. I would recommend it also.
Violinmaestro, I have not seen the other movie that you refer to. But it sounds a little different from the way you describe it. The tone of Breakfast on Pluto is not all that serious. It was actually surprising that the main character didn't experience more hardship because of who he was. So it's not a sad film or one that's hard to watch. A lot of it is just pure fantasy.

Brokeback Mountain--I liked that one. In fact, I thought it deserved to win Best Picture--instead of Crash, which I wasn't too fond of. I don't know if it had a point or not, but it was an interesting story.

Haven seen Brokeback Mountain but, the name itself kinda does justice to the movie. I know this may sound corky but he broke his back. quite gay. Haha. That'a all i have to say about that movie. But seriosly, i havent heard any positive feed from those who did see it(exception Diplomat).
Tristan and Isolde i do suggest you watch that one. quite well done, if you like something resembling history or stories of history.
New World also quite nice, a bit long and drawn out, about the english comming to America as we now know it, and how they delt with the native Indians, of course involving the story oh Pocahontas. Good before going to sleep.

I haven't heard that metaphor before but I'll take your word for it. :)
Tristan and Isolde ("I sold?")--is that romance? 'Cause that's not my favorite genre.
Also, has anyone seen Fun with Dick and Jane, a comedy with Jim Carrey? I thought it was neat how that movie incorporated in its storyline the collapse of Enron and the whole crash of the economy in 2000. Not a lot of films have addressed that. Jim Carrey is great in that one. His acting is closer to his earlier roles like Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber than to his recent work.

I feel the need to post and express slight disappointment with X-Men III cause I'd been looking forward to it for so long and the previews were amazing, but I have to admit that I walked out not too overly impressed with it. NOw I can look forward to Pirates of the Caribbean :) can't wait! MI: III was actually pretty good, I've always been a fan of James Bond 007 type movies so ofcourse, I enjoy the action and stuff from Mission Impossible as well...although I will admit that Tom Cruise is a little weirdy now. Anyways, I enjoyed it; plot wasn't half bad.
I watched Poseidon recently too which was quite suspenseful for me. I totally was on the edge of my seat...even though I pretty much knew what was going to happen cause I'd seen the original from the seventies.
Don't mention the NEW WORLD...whoooooaaaa, can't remember the last time I'd seen a movie that was completely drawn out and relatively uneventful. I'm sure I would've enjoyed it better as a novel though. That's usually the case with everything though...except maybe Star Wars, which I'm in the process of reviewing :) slowly...but surely.

IT is a romantic story but with lots of historical battles between the irish and the english, during the time period when the irish was controling the english islands, because they werent united (the tribes of england that is). all that changed during this movie.

but you know why right Heffie? they are loosing seirous money on their products, especially laptops, which by the way most of the army branches have, almost 1-4 man have and they are not buying dell's anymore, they are buying, HP's and Gateways. Yes Gateway. ITs comming back on the laptop industry quite strong. I dont care for gateway, but its there. Oh, i do have a gateway mouse pad( thats the only thing left from my first computer which was a gateway, that died of a bad hard drive. Mouse pads are good, i do recomment them. I even have their support numbers online and telephone if you ever need them. so yeah, Dell is trying hard( desktops are great, have one at home, and monitors, some of the best). We have 2 Dell laptops... and a couple of Dell LCD monitors. We haven't had any problems with the products themselves, but customer service is retarded.
The people that they have manning the call centers barely know anything about computers and all they are doing is reading from a script. Plus, we're a little mad because one of their sales people told us we would get 0% financing on the last laptop we bought because we were using our Dell Preferred Credit thing... but we didn't get it, instead it was 29%!!! And when we called customer service to complain, they wouldn't change our finance rate... *grumble*

We didn't have the person's name... and no other record than the verbal agreement. Dell refused to do anything about it.
Anyway, recently, we rented a bunch of movies, here's my take:
Bloodrayne - This I thought was going to be good because the game was rather interesting. It had a decent cast, but something went very wrong here. The only good thing about it was the goriness of the fight scenes... but everything else was crap.
Ultraviolet - This was an OK movie. But, a couple of things that bothered me were the ending, and the way the cinematography was done.
Howl's Moving Castle - Great story, great animation. I was also impressed by the english voice cast. Rather enjoyable, which I expected because I am a fan of Miyazaki's anime movies (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Laputa: Castle in the Sky... etc).

I think I mentioned Fun with Dick and Jane a while back. I thought it was a pretty smart and funny comedy. It portrayed in an exaggerated way what a lot of people were going through when the economy took a dive circa 2000. BTW, the real-life guy that Alec Baldwin's character was based on just died. Supersize Me was highly rated too, but I don't know why people made such a big deal out of it, like it was a revolutionary idea that McFood is bad for you. I quit eating there a long time ago. The burgers are not very good quality either. If you didn't know that McDonalds or KFC food will kill you, well, then, you have a lot to catch up on, to put it politely. The food industry in the USA is atrocious in general. I mean, when they stuff livestock with hormones and antibiotics, you know that can't be good for you.

hahaha... :D... precisely... I too don't see how that could still be news to anybody, but then again, as a culture in general we seem to really embrace the notion that bombarding people with information can solve anything.. so I guess whenever information that everybody knows is packaged in new and ingenious ways, the product is likely to be overrated and the information itself tends to be seen as new...then too, this is such a visual culture... so I guess seeing in 2 hours what that food does to somebody over an extened period of time is a whole lot better than hearing a bunch of numbers and facts..I wonder though how many people actually stopped eating junk food after seeing it...

really natural goods. (forgot the world for that) the word is organic.
a word which I am hating at the moment due to the craze that overtook my mother and aunts (they're trying to buy only organic foods).
As for movies, recently I've seen Nacho Libre, Tokyo Drift, and Pirates of the Carribean 2. I thought Nacho Libre is hilarious, but i guess it would depend on your sense of humor. Tokyo Drift wasn't as good as the other fast and the furious movies (they get worse everytime), and it also had nothing to do with them, except for the ending. Pirates of the Carribean sucked. It's like 2 and a half hours but it still don't resolve any of the problems. the ending is just horrible, but it does set up the third movie (hopefully.)

Finally watched Dodgeball. That movie was so dumb, it was funny. I was amused, so not really disappointed per se, but MAN I am really really getting annoyed by Vince Vaughn.
Also finally saw the movie, Old School, and I have to say that despite hating Will Ferrell... the movie was amusing.
Got a chance to watch that Nick Cage movie, The Weatherman. This is the one with Michael Caine (Austin Powers' dad) as hid father. I kinda liked the story because of how well it describes life, and also because the bulk of it occurs in/around Chicago (which I miss dearly).
Hmmm... what else did we watch kinda recently that hasn't been mentioned....?
Oh yeah!! We saw Nacho Libre last weekend. I know it looked like it would be a retarded movie, but it actually was a surprisingly "feel good" movie. I think the feeling you might be referring to is the signature of Michael Mann.. most of his movies have that same quality of turning mindless action into, at the very least, something "different"... Heat of course is a classic, Collateral was very interesting too.. especially b/c it worked so well on both levels - dialogue and action. I saw it with somebody who understood maybe 35% of what was said but they were on the edge of his seat the entire time.. and then he also did The Insider.. also, even if his films were mediocre on all other levels (which they are definitely not), his visual style is one of a kind.. very distinctive and very artsy!

I watched again after a couple of years AMELIE. I love this movie, it is so good in depicting people and their life stories as it is typical to european culture. I love how people tell you things that really dont have naything to do with you in particular, but that is something that is lagging in the american culture, thus people are so secretive by nature in most of their private affairs and even in some public situations where they have little to nothing to say about themselves other than where they work and what car they drive. I love the opennes of the european culture VS the secretive lifestyle of the americans.

I saw Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby sometime around Labor Day weekend.
I didn't really WANT to see it, but we went to a theatre with another couple, and they wanted to watch it. I have to say I was really surprised at how funny it was because I really hate Will Ferrel. It was pretty dumb, but it made fun of a lot of things that "Americans" like, so it was funny enough.
I was also surprised to see who was IN the movie, including Sascha Cohen (Ali G of "Da Ali G Show") and Andy Richter (used to be Conan O'Brien's side-kick, then had his own show for a little bit).
I wouldn't necessarily watch it again... but I don't feel that the money was totally wasted, either.

Yeah, I liked Inside Man too. Pretty clever. It's similar to Ocean's Eleven, but not as contrived or predictable. 16 Blocks was OK, not great. It didn't seem like the cops in the movie were very realistic. I didn't care too much about the main characters by the end.
I also recommend The Proposition. (Has anyone seen it?) It's an Australian Western. It's not a cheap action movie. Seems like a lot of effort has gone into making it. The theme in the movie is the forced settlement of Australia by the British Empire and the conflict between the whites and the natives. The movie gets pretty brutal at times. But that's what the filmakers were aiming at because they were trying to make a point.

They're only similar in style. Very different as to how they go about the actual heist. The idea of camouflaging the robbers among the witnesses - very ingenious and new! At least to me. And that's what made the movie unpredictable, as opposed to Ocean's Eleven, which doesn't stray too far from the formulaic plot of the heist genre.

But... I have watched a few movies lately:
Blades of Glory -- This was surprisingly pretty funny. We watched it because someone had come back to town for the weekend back when it was in theatres, and he wanted to see it. We had a pretty good time, and the movie, albeit stupid, was funny enough to make up for it. :)
Meet the Robinsons -- This movie made me cry, and I am not ashamed to say it. It was a feel-good movie, and had some pretty nice 'moral of the story' stuff.
300 -- All I can say is: WOW! I think it was well done, and since it was based on the graphic novel by Frank Miller, some of the 'larger than life' effects, which would have been cliche otherwise, worked very well.
Shrek the Third -- Really enjoyed this. It was pretty entertaining, plus, I liked the other Shrek movies.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End -- This one was ok. Leaves it open for yet another movie, if Disney runs out of ideas. I was surprised to see Chow Yun Fat in his role, but I think he did a good job. I'd say it's a rather entertaining movie. :)
And, a while ago we did go to see Grindhouse -- If you're a Quentin Tarantino fan, then you'd probably like it. I especially loved the fake movie previews. I hope some of those get made into movies... I'd probably watch them. :)
On video, we watched:
The Curse of the Golden Flower -- This one has Gong Li and Chow Yun Fat in it. I really enjoyed this film, especially the beautiful traditional Chinese garments. The theme of the movie is basically about how things are not as they seem: gold & jade on the outside, and rot lies within. If you enjoy foreign films, I'd recommend this one.
Eragon -- Watched this last night. I liked it... but I think I should probably read the books, since I think some of the things in the movie may not have been done well, or the way described in the book? I don't know there were a few things that didn't quite make sense... and maybe it's just the way it was adapted for screenplay. But, I did still like this movie, especially because the baby dragon reminds me of the dog we just adopted.
Epic Movie -- *rofl* I think this movie was a great parody. If you like parodies, then I suggest watching this if you haven't already.
Happy Feet -- Aside from the political & religious overtones... I enjoyed this one, too. I did think that the political & religious themes were a bit too much at times. I know it's a children's movie, and they don't really get that stuff, but this one was a little overbearing, and really, I felt some of it was unnecessary.

I haven't seen too many movies lately, but of those I've seen Grindhouse, Happy Feet, and Golden Flower.
Grindhouse was awesome! Though I know better than to recommend it. I liked it, but I see why a lot of people wouldn't. It's like a parody of those exploitation films that ran in the 70s. It was made to look like a low budget movie with extreme elements that could be exploited for viewership, like gore and sex. The reason I liked it was that it was so extreme and went beyond any mainstream movie. There were two films back to back. I thought the first one, the one about zombies and the machine gun leg girl, was better. I loved the fake trailers too. Overall, awesome theater experience.
Happy Feet was pretty good. The 3D animations looked very realistic. But I don't think the ice with the penguins on it is supposed to be that white and clean. In reality, it's usually drenched with penguin crap. :) The religious part was added to make it interesting for adults. What's wrong with it? I think it makes a good point about cultural and religious "traditions." I think most of the movie had a good pace to it but then it ended kind of in a hurry.
Golden Flower -- I don't remember much about the plot, but I know I didn't care for it. The story was corny. Trivial things were hyped out of proportion. The scenes were overacted. Maybe it's the cultural differences, but it was hard to take it seriously.
I've also seen Letters from Iwo Jima on video. Looked very authentic. It's the WWII battle of Iwo Jima seen from the Japanese side. (spoiler: Americans won. :) ) It's surprisingly good. Unlike Flags of Our Fathers, it's more collected in its storyline and its "arguments."
Norbit -- avoid.
